On UsuArcade, Cabal is played online in two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your buddy on theirs, in the same game and in real time, each with your own commando.
Cabal played like nothing else: your soldier stands with his back to you at the bottom of the screen while you sweep a crosshair across the whole battlefield. Shoot soldiers, tanks and choppers, and the buildings too, which crumble under your fire until there's nothing left but rubble.
History
Cabal was made by TAD Corporation and released in 1988; Fabtek handled it in the US. The title screen reads «© 1988 TAD CORPORATION».
It came out with a trackball first and later with a joystick and three buttons. The version on UsuArcade is the joystick one («Cabal (World, Joystick)») from MAME 0.239, the one that plays best with a gamepad or your thumbs.
How to play
The stick moves your crosshair and, while you're not shooting, your soldier follows it left and right. Z fires, and while you fire your soldier stands still: that's when you're easiest to hit. X throws a grenade (you start with ten) and C does a dive roll to dodge bullets.
Every level has several scenes. The ENEMY bar at the bottom drains with every enemy you take down, and when it runs out the scene is over. Lose all your lives and you've got a few seconds to continue with another coin; in co-op, whoever goes down can jump back in with START while their partner keeps fighting.
Fun facts
- The joystick version needed a third button the trackball one didn't have, so the board wires it to the service button pin.
- The buildings in the background break apart bit by bit as you shoot them, until they're just ruins.
- The «BEST 10 PLAYERS» table records not just your score but which level and scene you reached.
- Every level opens with a map of its four scenes and a helicopter dropping you into the first one.
In the arcade
Just like the arcade, but from home: grab a seat at the Cabal cabinet in the Action zone, invite your buddy when they show up in the arcade and clear the battlefield together, each with your own crosshair. Nothing to install: it runs in the browser, on your phone or PC, gamepad included, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, for free.
Your buddy can jump in even after you've started. While you play you can talk over game voice chat, everyone else in the arcade can drop in to watch, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score boards.
