Tonma is a kid in a blue cape who jumps his way through ancient ruins, blasting pig warriors and wizards and grabbing coins, money bags and treasure chests. It's one of those bright, cheerful arcade games you play with a grin on your face, right up until the clock at the top starts closing in.
History
Legend of Hero Tonma was made by Irem and released in 1989 on its M72 board, the same family as R-Type. The title screen reads «© 1989 IREM CORP.».
The board carries a small microcontroller that protected the game against bootlegs and played back the digitized voices. The version on UsuArcade is «Legend of Hero Tonma (World)» from MAME 0.239.
How to play
The arrow keys move Tonma, Z fires and X jumps. Keep pushing forward, dodge or take down the enemies and grab everything that shines: coins and treasure pump up your score.
Every life gets its own 3-minute clock, and you start with three. With two players you take turns: the turn passes when you lose a life. After GAME OVER you've got 10 seconds to continue with another coin, with your score reset to zero.
Fun facts
- The clock resets to 3:00 with every life: let it run out and that life is gone.
- Before you play, you see the stage map with its name, like «RUINS», the first one.
- On the CONTINUE screen you pick YES or NO with the stick, with a ten-second countdown.
- It runs on the same family of boards as R-Type: Irem's M72.
