On UsuArcade, World Rally 2 is played online against a friend: each of you on your own phone or PC, in the same race, in real time. Just like the original twin cabinet, each player gets their own screen with their own car, clock and position, and you both race the same stage at the same time.
It was the rally machine of mid-'90s arcades: dirt, snow, big jumps and the clock always against you. Now you can race your buddy just like back then, each from your own couch.
History
Gaelco, the Barcelona studio, released World Rally 2: Twin Racing in 1995, following the success of World Rally. The Twin version ran two screens off a single board, one per player, so two people could race in the same cabinet.
It kept its predecessor's top-down view and added four rallies with very different scenery, from the coast to the desert and the snow.
How to play
The stick steers left and right and the button is the gas. After START you pick your car and your rally: Portugal is easy, Safari normal, Corsica difficult and the RAC is for experts. Each stage has to be finished in 60 seconds; cross the finish line for bonus points and move on to the next one. If time runs out, you get a few seconds to continue with another coin and run the stage again from the start; otherwise it's GAME OVER.
With two players, when one hits START the other has 10 seconds to hit theirs and race the same stage. If your buddy jumps in while you're already racing, the game asks you both «Competition?» and, if you both say yes, the race starts over for both of you. Whoever has the most points at the end wins.
Fun facts
- The title screen reads «© 1995 GAELCO S.A., SPAIN»: it's an arcade game made in Spain.
- The board was protected by a Dallas DS5002FP microcontroller; without its program, the game warns «Coprocessor Not Ready».
- Every stage opens with the same warning: «Complete Race in 60 Seconds».
- After each stage you get the stage and rally standings, with your rivals shown as three-letter tags.
In the arcade
Just like the arcade, but from home: grab a seat at the World Rally 2 cabinet in the racing row, invite your buddy when they show up in the arcade and each of you drives on your own screen. Nothing to install: it runs in the browser, on your phone or PC, gamepad included, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, for free.
Everyone else in the arcade can drop in to watch both screens at once, and your scores go on the arcade's leaderboards. Out Run, Hang-On, Pole Position and Rally-X are waiting in the same row.
