On UsuArcade, Capcom Sports Club goes head-to-head online against a friend: each of you on your own phone or PC, in the same game and in real time. It's three games in one cabinet: tennis, soccer and 3-on-3 basketball, all with Capcom's over-the-top, just-for-fun style.
Drop a coin, pick a sport and go. Matches are short, you get it right away, and just like at the arcade, whoever loses always wants one more.
History
Capcom released Capcom Sports Club in 1997 on its CPS2 board, the same hardware behind a lot of its '90s fighting games. Instead of a single sport, it packed three into one cabinet: Smash Stars (tennis), Kick Stars (soccer) and Dunk Stars (3-on-3 basketball).
It came out in several regions, with versions for Europe, Asia and Japan. It was never one of Capcom's big names, which is exactly why it's such a fun surprise if you missed it back in the day.
How to play
After you hit START, the first player picks a sport with the stick and the A button; then each of you picks a country or team, and in tennis, a player. Move with the stick and use three buttons, A, B and C, which do different things depending on the sport: hit, pass, shoot or jump.
Playing solo, you run through a tournament against the CPU. If a friend hits their START in the middle of it, they jump in as the challenger and the match becomes the two of you. The winner keeps going in the tournament against the CPU, and the loser gets a countdown to continue. One thing to know in head-to-head: if it ends in a tie, the challenger loses.
Fun facts
- It packs three games onto one board: Smash Stars, Kick Stars and Dunk Stars.
- It ran on Capcom's CPS2 board.
- The basketball game, Dunk Stars, is 3-on-3.
- When a challenge match ends in a tie, the player who was already in the tournament wins.
In the arcade
Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Capcom Sports Club cabinet in the Sports zone, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and play the match against each other. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.
Your friend can even challenge you while you're playing the tournament against the CPU. The loser can drop a CONTINUE for a rematch, anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
