Metal Slug X is on the UsuArcade coming-soon list. Once it lands in the arcade, it will play as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time.
Anyone who played Metal Slug 2 at the arcade remembers two things: how gorgeous it looked and how badly it chugged when the screen filled up. Metal Slug X showed up a year later to fix that and shake up almost everything else along the way. For a lot of fans, it's the definitive way to play that adventure.
History
SNK released Metal Slug X in 1999 for the Neo Geo as a reworked version of Metal Slug 2. It's no simple patch: enemies are rearranged, bosses swapped, items moved around and new weapons added. The missions are the same at heart, but the run feels fresh.
The most celebrated upgrade was smoothness. The slowdown that dragged Metal Slug 2 down was cut way back, so the most chaotic moments, with explosions and dozens of soldiers on screen, finally played the way they should.
How to play
Pick Marco, Tarma, Eri or Fio and blast your way to the right. One button shoots, one jumps and one throws grenades. Freeing the bearded POWs gets you weapons and bonuses, and Metal Slug X shuffles the arsenal: there are new guns like the Iron Lizard, which fires charges that skitter along the ground, and the Drop Shot, with bouncing shots.
Vehicles are still the heart of the series: tanks, cannon-toting camels and planes you can ride until they've taken too much damage. Watch out for the desert mummies, which can turn you into one, and go easy on the food, because too much leaves you fat and slow.
