Shadow Dancer is Shinobi's arcade sequel: the same white-clad ninja, the same throwing stars and ninja magic, but this time with a four-legged partner who charges straight at the bad guys.

History
Sega released Shadow Dancer in 1989 on its System 18 board, two years after Shinobi. It kept the side-scrolling action and the leaps between two levels, and added the ninja dog, who attacks on your command and clears the way.

How to play
Use the stick to move and crouch; Z attacks, X jumps and C casts ninja magic to wipe the screen. Hold the stick down and press Z, and your dog bolts at the nearest enemy and pins him so you can finish him off.
Every stage has a clock: if it hits zero, you lose a life. Lose your last one and you've got a few seconds to drop another coin and pick up right where you were, with two free ninja magics.

- The machine's own demo shows off the dog trick: “NINJA DOG ATTACK,” stick down plus the attack button.
- The continue screen dangles a reward: “CONTINUE NOW, AND GET 2 NINJA MAGICS!”
