It's 1985 arcade soccer seen from above, with the whole pitch scrolling behind the ball, full-speed dribbles, lofted shots and goals cheered on by the crowd. You always control the player on your team who's closest to the ball.
History
Tehkan World Cup came out in 1985 from Tehkan, the Japanese company that became Tecmo the following year. The original cabinet had a trackball for each player: the faster you spun it, the faster your player ran and the harder he shot.
It was a cocktail table cabinet, with the two players facing each other. That's why the second player's trackball is turned around and some messages show up upside down when it's the blue team's turn. The version on UsuArcade is MAME's set 1.
How to play
Run with the stick: reach the ball and you dribble it, let go and you stop with it. Z fires a lofted shot where you're running and X plays a ground pass. On UsuArcade the stick stands in for the trackball: you run like you're giving it a good spin, shots come out hard and passes soft, and both players get the exact same feel in every direction.
For two players, each of you drops a coin and hits START: the match runs three and a half minutes, and every coin during play adds two more. When «TIME UP» hits, you've got ten seconds to keep going with the same score. Solo, you play red against the computer, and every win takes you to the next match.
Fun facts
- The title screen reads «©1985 TEHKAN LTD.» and the trophy in the attract mode says «WORLD FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP».
- The «BEST PLAYERS» table doesn't track points: it records how far each player got against the computer, from the 1st to the 4th match.
- In a two-player match, every coin dropped mid-game adds two more minutes: «EXTRA TIME PER COIN 2:00».
- The same three-Z80 board also ran the football game Gridiron Fight and the golf game Tee'd Off.
