Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa leaderboard

On UsuArcade, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa plays online in co-op for up to four, just like the original cabinet: everyone on their own phone or PC, in the same game, in real time.

It's Konami's 1992 Wild West beat 'em up, based on the cartoon about the bovine cowboys of Moo Mesa: Lily gets kidnapped and it's up to you to shoot your way through the town, the mine and the saloon, jumping over barrels, wagons and mine carts.

History

Konami released it in 1992, the same year the cartoon it's based on premiered, on the same board as Bucky O'Hare: a 68000 with Konami's own graphics and sound chips. Like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or The Simpsons, it was built for four players at once, on a wide four-joystick cabinet.

It never got a home version, so the arcade is the only way to play it. UsuArcade runs "Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa (ver EAB)" on MAME 0.239.

How to play

The joystick moves in eight directions, Z shoots and X jumps, just like the game itself shows you ("SHOT" and "JUMP"). Each spot has its own cowboy: P1 is Buffalo Bull, P2 Marshal Moo Montana, P3 Cowlorado Kid and P4 Dakota Dude.

Each coin gives three lives. After your coin, hit START (or shoot) to jump in; otherwise the game drops you in on its own after 20 seconds. One START gets everyone with a coin in, even mid-game. If you run out of lives, you've got about 20 seconds to continue with another coin, but your score goes back to zero.

Fun facts

  • The cartoon and the arcade game both came out in 1992.
  • Bucky O'Hare, another 1992 Konami arcade game, runs on the same board.
  • It was never ported to consoles: the arcade is all there is.
  • Each cowboy gets his own color on the four-column select screen.

In the arcade

Just like at the arcade, but everyone at home: sit down at the Moo Mesa machine, in the Konami Room or the main arcade, invite your friends when they show up and clean up the town together, up to four cowboys at once. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, on your phone or PC, with a gamepad too, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, for free.

Your friends can join even after you've started. Everyone else in the arcade can watch the game live, and your scores go on the arcade's high score boards.
