It's seven-on-seven soccer with armored players: charge up a monster shot, knock your rival flat with a mechanical arm and steal the ball with slide tackles. You always control the player tagged 1P or 2P.
History
Soccer Brawl is an SNK game released in 1991 for the Neo Geo MVS, the cartridge-based arcade board. The title screen reads «©SNK CORP. OF AMERICA 1991».
It imagines soccer in the future: the stadiums open in the year 2050 in Osaka and 2088 in San Francisco, and the players sport implants like the «POWER-ARM» and the «HYPER-FOOT». The version on UsuArcade is the arcade one (MVS, NGM-031) from MAME 0.239.
How to play
Run with the stick and dribble the ball. Z shoots, and if you hold it you fill the POWER METER for the POWER SHOOT. Without the ball, Z is a slide tackle or, with the meter full, the ARM PUNCH. X passes or heads the ball, and Z and X together throw a body tackle.
For two players, each of you drops a coin and hits START: pick your team and stadium and play a three-minute match; if it ends in a tie, it goes to a penalty shootout. Solo, you play the league against the computer: every win takes you to the next match, and if you lose you've got ten seconds to continue.
Fun facts
- There are eight national teams: USA, Germany, England, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Italy and Korea.
- The «BEST STRIKERS» table doesn't track goals or points: it records how far into the league each player got.
- If a two-player match ends in a tie there's a penalty shootout («PK»), and if that's tied too the game flashes «DRAW GAME».
- The attract mode shows off the players' implants, like the «POWER-ARM» and the «HYPER-FOOT», with their «SUPER SHOCK ABSORBER».
