Jet Set Willy is the 1984 sequel to Manic Miner. Willy has struck it rich and thrown a huge party at his mansion, and now Maria the housekeeper won't let him go to bed until he's collected everything the guests left lying around.

In UsuArcade's ZX Spectrum Room you play it online, free, right in your browser: grab a desk, pick the tape off the shelf and, once the loading ritual is done, you're in.

History

Matthew Smith wrote it and Software Projects published it in 1984. Instead of separate caverns, it offered a sprawling mansion with dozens of connected rooms you could explore freely, a seriously ambitious idea for a 48K machine.

The first release shipped with a bug that made it impossible to finish, and Software Projects ended up publishing POKEs to fix it. To fight piracy, it came with a color code card you had to check when loading.

How to play

You explore the mansion jumping across platforms, stairs and ropes, collecting the glowing items in each room. There's no air meter like in Manic Miner, but enemies follow fixed patterns and long falls cost you a life. It's all about learning the routes.

Fun facts

  • It's the direct sequel to Manic Miner.
  • Its copy protection was a card with a grid of colored codes.
  • Maria the housekeeper waits at the bedroom door until you've tidied everything up.

In the ZX Room

In the ZX Room you play and your friends watch your game live, with picture and sound, while you all chat by voice or text, just like when they came over to watch you play.

No coins here: walk in, pick the tape and play. If you still own the original, official mode lets you load your own tape.
