Metal Slug 5 is on the UsuArcade coming-soon list. Once it lands in the arcade, it will play as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time.

Metal Slug 5 showed up when the Neo Geo was in its final years in arcades, and it still found new tricks: a slide move that changes how you dodge, enemies that look nothing like the usual grunts and a soundtrack with more guitar than ever.

History

It came out in 2003, developed by Noise Factory for SNK Playmore, and was one of the last games released for the Neo Geo. After the fourth game brought in new faces, this one reunites the original four-soldier squad.

The story mostly sidelines General Morden and puts the Ptolemaic Army front and center, a shadowy group that steals data on the Slug vehicles. That opens the door to a different feel and enemies unlike anything in earlier games.

How to play

As always in the series, you run, gun, jump and toss grenades, freeing POWs who hand you weapons and points. The big addition is the slide: crouch and hit jump to skid along the ground under bullets and low attacks, which totally changes how you deal with bosses.

The standout vehicle is the Slug Gunner, a mech that walks on two legs or crouches down into tank mode. Some stages let you choose your route, so no two runs have to play out the same.

Fun facts

  • It's the first game in the series where you can slide along the ground.
  • The main villains are the Ptolemaic Army, not Morden's troops.
  • The soundtrack leans harder into rock than earlier entries.
